WHAT TO BRING

ATV Rides

When you are riding in the mountains, you should always keep in mind that the weather can change in an instant. While it may be sunny and 80 degrees at one moment or at your starting location, it can change to snow, rain or hail and below freezing as you change in elevation. Here is our suggested list of what to bring for your ATV ride:

  • Sunglasses and goggles or some sort of eye protection. Goggles and maps are available for purchase at rental locations or you can pre-order when making a reservation.

  • Waterproof and breathable rain gear.

  • Extra Clothing: Dressing in layers is wise but also remember extra clothing if it turns cold.

  • Sunscreen: While it may feel cool in the mountains, the UV rays are much more intense at higher elevations and you will burn more quickly.

  • Shoes should have closed toes. Sandals are not recommended.

  • Take plenty of water and extra food. You should always be prepared for the worst, in case you get stranded or lost.

  • First Aid Kit

  • Drivers License

Snowmobile Rides

Just as with ATV rides, when riding snowmobiles in the mountains you will need to prepare for changing weather conditions. This can be more extreme during the winter months at higher elevations. It may be sunny and mild when you start out, but you could experience snow storms and sub zero temperatures before the day is out. The Bureau of Land Management has put together a guide to snowmobiling which includes an extensive list of items to consider before you hit the snowmobile trails. In addition, here is our suggested list of what to bring for your snowmobile ride:

  • Sunglasses and goggles or some sort of eye protection. Goggles and maps are available for purchase at rental locations or you can pre-order when making a reservation.

  • Warm, windproof and waterproof gear that is also breathable. Be prepared for wind and blowing snow.

  • Wear layers, including items such as Capilene and fleece, and bring extra clothing. The Weather Channel provides some really great tips on how to dress and layer up for winter weather.

  • Sunscreen: The UV rays are much more intense at higher elevations and the reflection from the snow makes the UV rays even stronger.

  • Have plenty of water with you and bring some extra food. Be prepared in case you get stuck out there or lose your way.

  • First Aid/Survival Kit

  • Avalanche kits are recommended when riding avalanche terrain. When properly used, these kits can dramatically increase your chances of survival if you are caught in an avalanche. The basic components of an avalanche kit include a beacon, probe and shovel, and are usually carried in a backpack. Visit the Crested Butte Avalanche Center for updates on the most recent conditions and information related to avalanche dangers in our area.
